Bob, a poet, and Tony, a writer of imaginative fiction, began Freedom to Read Week in Calgary. Following the attempt by an Alberta MLA to remove John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men from the school curriculum, they formed a committee of writers, booksellers, librarians, educators, politicans and readers to fight for the public's right to choose its own reading material. Over approximately eight years, Tony and Bob talked to students and organized readings, panel discussions and celebrations. With Kerry Longpré of Sandpiper Books, they set up the annual presentation of the Steinbeck/Sandpiper Award. They also inaugurated the annual presentation of the Freedom to Read book to Calgary city council during Freedom to Read Week. Without their sustained efforts, there would be no observance of Freedom to Read Week in Calgary. |
